Brunswick Bush School April 2019 Holiday Program
|Mon 15th April||Make your own Flint and Steel||A flint and steel is a great practical tool for lighting a campfire when you are out bush. It’s a must have for anyone who takes their fire lighting seriously. Today we construct our very own flint and steel, carving a special wooden handle and putting it all together for a fine tool you will get years of enjoyment from.||
|Tue 16th||Make a Plant/flower Press||A plant/flower press is a cool way to dry plants that can be later used for decoration, storage and identification. Today we will be making our own from wood. We’ll also collect some plants and flowers from the bush and press them.||
|Wed 17th||Elfin and Hobbit Houses||Come with us as we enter the enchanted world of fairies, goblins and elves! Get creative as we craft our own magical homes from special materials we collect- mosses and fungus, bark and leaves. Let your imagination run wild......|
|Thur 18th||Knots and Shelters||Come on down for a practical lesson in knot tying. Today we learn several handy knots that have many uses in the bush. Then we will build cool shelters from materials we find in the bush.||
|Frid 19th||Canoeing Mullum to Brunz||The tides are perfect for a Paddle down the main arm of the Brunswick River. We will paddle from Mullum to Brunz taking in bushland and wildlife along the way and stopping for a swim and to explore wild and remote river banks!!||
|Mon 22nd||Water Blasters||Get set for the biggest water fight ever! You will make your own water cannon that can shoot a blast of water up to 10 metres!(shooting downhill with a tailwind!) Be prepared to get a serious drenching and for loads of fun. *There is a materials charge of $10. Kids get to take home their blaster.||
|Tue 23rd||Fire Making Kit Day 1: Sew a pouch||In this two day workshop we learn about the importance of fire as a powerful tool. We teach fire safety and practice starting a fire using natural materials we have collected. On day one we sew a special pouch to put our fire kit into. If you don’t want to do both days you can just come along and sew a beautiful leather pouch.||
|Wed 24th||Fire making kit day 2: Gathering the pieces and putting it together||
For the second day of this activity we collect special fire making fibres, grasses and barks to make a fire starting kit that can be carried around in your pack when you are out bush. We then practice making a fire using the things we have collected.
|Thur 25th||Canoeing Simpson’s Creek||One of our most popular activities, we spend the day on the beautiful Brunswick River, catching the incoming tide up the wild reaches of Simpson’s creek. Exploring river banks and encountering wildlife, we camp for lunch on a beautiful bush beach and then catch the outgoing tide back again.||
|Frid 26th||Whittling||Bring your pocket knives. We’ll be whittlin’ away the time by the creek honing our skills and making some fancy craft pieces. We’ll cover the basics of safety and how to whittle. If you don’t have a knife don’t worry we’ll have spares for you to use.||
All activities will run from 9-3pm and are based outdoors for the entire day. We meet outside the Brunswick Heads Surf Life Saving Club and then head into the bush (except for canoeing days. When canoeing we meet adjacent to the river. Notice will be sent via email on where to meet).
The activities presented on any given day may change due to weather, numbers and other unforeseen circumstances. In the case of wet weather we set up basic tarp shelters. Each day is interspersed with games, sacred circles, 'sit spot' (nature meditation), a swim if weather permits and other nature connection activities.
Cost is $60* per day per child. 10% discount for siblings.
